It was created in 1993 and is part of the international emergency response system that deploys teams within 12 to 48 hours to sudden-onset emergencies in every part of the world. These courageous teams are among the heroes of the UN as they are deployed, free of charge, to disasters-affected countries in situations such as earthquakes. They risk their own lives to save ours.
